Lay Speaking Ministry Seeking New Speakers

What is a lay speaker, you ask?  A lay speaker is a professing member of a local church or charge who is ready and desirous to serve the church.  Lay speakers serve the local church or charge in any way in which their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity to deeper commitment to Jesus Christ.  If you are interested in becoming a lay speaker and/or wish to learn more about Asbury’s Lay Speaking Ministry, please contact Sandra King-Shaw, Thomas Williams, Fred Price, or Ruth Scarbrough.

 
 
 New Young Adult Sunday School Class
A formal invitation to all of Asbury's young adults and those young at heart is extended to those of you who would like to participate in a young adult Sunday school class that is designed to have us in mind. Come, share, and fellowship with us. Every Sunday morning at 9:30 am in room 2-3. If you have any questions about the Young Adult Sunday School, please contact Kamilah Bennett.
 
 
 UMW Susanna Group Bible Study
The discussion group on Flawed Families of the Bible: How God's Grace Works through Imperfect Relationships, by David E. Garland and Diana R. Garland, will meet immediately following the 10:30 am Worship service today February 17, 2008 in Room 1-11 and the third Sunday of each month from February to June: March 16th, April 20th, May 18th, and June 15th.  Benefit Concert for Marcus Simmons Italy Tour

Come enjoy an afternoon of classical art songs, opera arias, and Negro spirituals by Marcus Simmons, grandson of Josephine and Isham Baker. The recital is Saturday, May 17th at 4pm on the campus of Univ. of MD Baltimore County.  Marcus, a  bass-baritone, and a  2007 graduate of Philadelphia’s Central High School,  is a Vocal Performance major and Linehan Artist Scholar at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. This summer he will intern with the International Opera Theater in Italy for six weeks.  Concert proceeds will help defray travel and living expenses during the Italian tour.  For more information please contact Josephine or Isham Baker at 202-244-4879, or email the Bakers for a flyer and map.

 
 
 Higher Praise Gospel Chorale Concert

HPGCV will minister in song for the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Washington D.C. and Vicinity, Inc. on Saturday May 24, 2008, 7pm at Shiloh Baptist Church, 8801 Ardmore Road Landover, Md. Concert is free. All are welcome. For more information, call Thelma Johnson.

 
 
 Asbury Performing Arts Theatre (APAT)
Feel you have a book inside of you, a short story or a play? APAT is planning a Christian writer's workshop during the spring and summer called, Writer's of the Word. Bring your work and create in God's name! All attendees must sign up. Please contact Dottye WIlliams by phone or email.
 
 
 Rev. Matthews Retirement Banquet

The Baltimore West Superintendency Committee would like to invite the Asbury congregation to a Retirement Banquet in honor of Rev. Dr. Eugene Matthews on June 1, 2008 (not June 8th) at the Turf Valley Hotel and Conference Center. Deadline is April 15, 2008. Tickets are approximately $50 or $500 per table of 10.  Annual Talent Show
The Single Adult Ministry and The Asbury Performing Arts Theatre will have a Talent Call for their upcoming Annual Talent Show. All interested persons should come between 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on May 3, 2008. Be ready to SHOW your talent. Show time for the show will be announced.  Calling All Poets!

 United Methodist Group 9 Tuition Assistance
Group 9 is now accepting applications for tuition assistance from youth of Asbury who are students in their senior year of high school, or any year of college. Each applicant must be at least 16 years of age and the son or daughter of a member of Asbury. A committee of Group 9 members will select one or more applicants deemed most deserving. The awards will be presented at the group's June 21, 2008 meeting at the church.  2008 Women's Spiritual Retreat

Registration is now open for this year's retreat, "The Phenomenal Woman", will take place one day only, September 6, 2008, at The Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriotsville, MD.  Part-time Custodial Staff Position Opening
The Staff Parish Relations Committee is seeking applicants for a part-time position on the custodial staff of the church.  Applications are available in the main office.
 
 
 Asbury Federal Credit Union
Asbury Federal Credit Union will have a table in G-1, every first and third Sunday, beginning the first Sunday in April. We will take new memberships and discuss any concerns with current members.

The Asbury Communicator is printed bimonthly (every two months). Please submit articles by the 10th of October, December, February, and April.
